Background
Founded in 2003, with offices and staff in Massachusetts, Maine, and Texas, Milcord provides high-value R&D solutions for its customers, with specific focus areas of semantic knowledge management, knowledge graphs, machine learning, decision science, and reasoning.
Using an open innovation approach that leverages the complementary experience of their team and partners results in a reduction of project risk and accelerates the research to the commercialization phase.
Commercialization project Medigraph is a Life Assistant that builds a knowledge base from user’s daily interactions with wearables and devices, and helps users manage wellness in their personal and professional lives.
Milcord plans to commercialize Medigraph using the company’s semLayer platform developed in MARCIMS and MIDAS projects.
As a background, Milcord received $4.5M to date build Marine Civil Information Management System (MARCIMS), which is now a DoD Program of Record. MARCIMS is deployed globally and is used by the USMC Civil Affairs and their partners in Disaster Response and Humanitarian Assistance missions.
In addition, Milcord recently won $2.1M MARCIMS NexGen project to develop a more scalable version of the semLayer platform. The underlying software platform without the DoD content is called semLayer that Milcord is applying to different applications. One such application is Medical Informatics Decision Assistance and Support MIDAS) project. If all of the options get exercised, MIDAS funding is $2.25M.
Marine Civil Information Management System (MARCIMS)
Milcord is the primary developer of the MARCIMS knowledge base and mobile data collection capability, currently funded as a joint effort between ONR and US Marine Corps Systems Command, which has transitioned into a DOD Program of Record of the same name.
MARCIMS is a semantic knowledge base for Civil Information Management (CIM) built on a semantic wiki platform that enables users to collect, organize, tag, search, browse, visualize, and share structured CIM knowledge. The capability is deployed on Amazon Web Services cloud infrastructure service resources and adheres to the Defense Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Process (DIACAP) standards for secure deployment of information technology systems.
Information is collected in the field using a developed mobile application, with the semantic wiki creating a page for each assessment, and capturing and generating new relationships about entities by tagging data using a “subject, property, object” semantic annotation format, creating a knowledge base for operators to query and explore. Query responses can be visualized as tables, charts, graphs, maps, and exported to existing information product templates within Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
Medical Informatics Decision Assistance and Support (MIDAS)
The objective of the Medical Informatics Decision Assistance and Support (MIDAS) project is to research, develop, and design a capability for sensing, addressing, and acting to combat the musculoskeletal injury epidemic facing Navy and Marine Corps personnel.
The solution makes relevant physical training observations and contextual information accessible to humans and machines as a knowledge graph; apply machine learning, reasoning, and semantics to assert a Musculoskeletal Injury Risk Score (MIRS) that leverages contextual knowledge, such as personnel activity, demographic data, and unit training requirements; enable USMC Force Fitness personnel and trainers to improve individual and unit injury prevention by providing dynamic training injury risk assessments; alert and quickly modify user behavior (athletic, active duty assignment, etc.) based on observed metrics (“situational awareness”); and enhance timely and open communication between military unit personnel through dynamic performance monitoring, messaging, and easy to understand user interfaces.
The outcomes of Phase I set the stage to research, develop, and demonstrate a full scale prototype MIDAS knowledge graph and analytics engine that targets and utilizes USMC training system concepts and resources to predict and mitigate the effects of musculoskeletal injuries.
